St. Mary of Egypt

2013.04.21 The Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

Sermon by Father Jonah

Mark 10: 32 Now they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed. And as they followed they were afraid. Then He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them the things that would happen to Him: 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles; 34 and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”  35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”  36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”  37 They said to Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.”  38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”  39 They said to Him, “We are able.”  So Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; 40 but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.”  41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. 42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

First to say a few things about the Gospel today. This reading brings us to the last Sunday of Great Lent since next Sunday is Palm Sunday, when we celebrate, which is different. And today the Church puts in front of us the fruit of repentance. This shows to us what should be the result of the spiritual preparation, what should be the result of all these prayers and other things we do: St, Mary of Egypt.

I will say a few things about her. She was a young girl who had the demon of prostitution; she was doing this not for money, but just for pleasure. Because of this, she traveled with many young men from Alexandria, where she lived, to Jerusalem to kiss the Holy Cross. So she joined in and having all the sins in the ship she went to Jerusalem.

There she tried to enter the Church of the Resurrection, which is still there today, to kiss the Cross, but some kind of power did not allow her to enter. She understood it was God who did not allow her to enter because of her sinful life. So she prayed to an icon of the Holy Mother outside of the church, crying to say that if she was allowed to go in, she would do whatever God wanted her to do. So she kissed the Holy Cross after she went inside and confessed her sins. The she went out and went to the icon of the Holy Mother and she heard a voice from the icon telling her to cross the river of Jordan and live in the desert. The Holy Mother told her that sexual desire was so special for her that she could not live in the world. So after a few days she received the Holy Communion, crossed the river and lived in the desert the rest of her life.

After many years, God sent a message to a priest saying that he should go to the desert and he would find a very holy person there. So he went into the desert and he found something that looked like a lot of hair, and he was afraid. But she called him by his name since she had the Grace of God now, and she asked him to bless her since he was a priest. But he was shocked that she know his name, and he asked her for a blessing since she was a holy person. So he knelt down, but he looked at her and saw Mary praying and that she was lifting up in the air as she was praying.

Then Mary told him her life in the desert. For the first seven years, her life had been full of unbelievable temptations. Demons were bringing all her memories of sexuality to tempt her, she was fighting so much and praying, and she had nothing to eat except the dirt, but she stayed there and continued to pray. After another seven years, the Holy Mother gave her peace, and after this she had the Grace of God so much that she had not the need to eat, like an angel. She knew many things about the monastery of Father Sophronius and her mind was full of the Grace of God. She knew everything.

She said to him, next year come back and bring me the Holy Communion, he brought it to her and then she said to come again “And you will find me as God wants.” So the next year the Father came back, but he found her dead, and she had written in the soil. “Maria is my name.” So he cried and prayed to do the funeral service. But he could not dig since he was so old. Then he saw two lions who came; at first he was scared, but the lions became like dogs and were licking the body of this holy woman. Then the lions dug with their feet and the priest put her body in, they covered it and then the lions left, because the animals recognized the holiness and the smell of paradise on her. So we see how the animals cooperate and they are in the holiness of paradise and the love of God.
